"I paid $50 and I could have fooled anybody," said Smith, a Thomas Jefferson High School senior who purchased the gown last year at the school's first dress resale event, "Impress for Le$$."

"Many of these are more unique than something you'd find at Macy's," said Smith, 17, who is helping to organize the event as a member of Thomas Jefferson's "The Future is Mine" organization, leading the peer-to-peer project. "The prices are fantastic."

"Impress for Le$$," sponsored by school organizations "The Future is Mine" and the prom committee, was started last school year as a way to help raise money for the then-financially struggling Thomas Jefferson High School junior-senior prom.

It also provided students with a place to purchase name brand, sometimes new gowns for special occasions at an affordable price, said home economics teacher Michele Stoicovy, who sponsors "The Future is Mine." Dresses range in price from $5 to $150.

"It promotes recycling – or upcycling – and it makes the expenses of the dance a little more affordable for the students," Stoicovy said.

Students who donate dresses to "Impress for Le$$" will receive a percentage discount on their ticket to the 2013 Thomas Jefferson prom, if the gown sells, Smith said.

Accessories also will be on sale at the "upscale" recycling event and vendors will be available to talk about hair, limos and jewelry. Some of the dresses for sale, even, have never been worn.

"Impress for Le$$" isn't just for Thomas Jefferson students. Last year, students from nearby districts attended and found dresses to take home, Stoicovy said.

Last year, more than $1,000 in merchandise was sold at the first "Impress for Le$$" held in January,High Quality A-Line Wedding Dresses is on sale at cheap prices from Chinese a-line wedding dresses wholesaler. Thomas Jefferson senior Christina Meyer purchased two dresses last year totaling $40. One she wore to prom last year that cost her $30. And that $10 dress, she plans to wear to this year's Snowball.

"I liked that they were classy, but also simple," Meyer said of her purchases.

"It's really inexpensive, so the girls that want to get brand names can get them at a lesser value," said TJ senior Madison Gentile, 17. "People are getting great dresses for an inexpensive price and we also get some money to help the prom. It's like everyone wins."
