One of the most fascinating aspects of curating a show is learning more about how works are made - and curators at Tate are privileged to work alongside an amazing team of conservators. I have been talking with Rachel Barker, a painting conservator, about three of the ‘squeegee’ abstractions in the central room in the Richter show.
So, after the under-painting is determined ready Richter then covers it with thick oil paint, sometimes using wide headed brushes but more frequently with his squeegee. The squeegee usually comprises a length of flexible Perspex fitted with a wooden handle. The edge of the Perspex is used to etch, scrap or smear the paint across the surface of the work. In the film showing Richter painting we also see the artist distributing oil paint along the length of the squeegee and then applying it to the surface.
Richter’s assistants prepare his oil paint. The paint is purchased in huge cans. It is then strained through sections of muslin in order to further refine it, that is, de-clump it from pigment agglomerations. Multiple layers of paint are applied on top of the initial under-painting. As Richter often contemplates his under-painting for sometime it can be assumed that this paint layer is superficially dry by the time it comes to the ‘squeegee’ stage. Richter may also be using his knowledge of the different drying rates of different colours of oil paint to manipulate the drying characteristics of each layer of his painting.

4. A “palette” When it comes to palettes, you don’t have to be fancy. For a while I used a big piece of glass. To clean it, I just took a flat razor blade and scraped all the old paint off.
5. A painter’s easel Every oil painter needs an easel but you may not need an expensive one right at first. At the very least an easel should be adjustable to your height and securely hold your paintings, whatever size they may be.

This is a difficult step, but you definitely need to target galleries who are at the same "level" as you. We're not saying not to be ambitious, but at our Gallery Oil Paintings we represented very fine and respected artists and regularly turned away artists who hadn't yet mastered drawing, perspective, color mixing, etc.
3.Go through each gallery's roster of artists looking for artists whom you personally know. If you really are at the same "level" as the artists in your target galleries, chances are you will have at least met some of them.
4. Ask your artist friend if the gallery would like your work. Just ask. This is someone who knows you and the gallery....they'll give you an honest answer. It will be easier to accept hear the truth from your friend than it will be to get a rejection letter from the gallery.
5. If possible, have your friend send the portfolio. Simply give the portfolio to your friend, ask him to write on a post-it note "this is the artist I told you about" and send it.

For the past few months I've been living with most of the phones on the market in an ongoing mission to find out which one is best. Today's test is mainly about establishing which is the best 4G phone on the market although I'll also cover the best 3g smart phones at all price points too.
The fast-paced, cutting-edge nature of phone technology means there's always something new appearing. However, it does pose a challenge for tests such as this in that I can only wait so long for the next phone to appear.
The importance of cameras A factor that has become increasingly more important is camera. My son's recent school concert was illustrative: there wasn't one single camcorder or stills camera on display as all the parents were using phones instead. As such I look for decent video, sharp outdoor pictures and good indoor performance.
4G 4G coverage is still patchy throughout Australia but it's definitely improving. Furthermore, despite fears for a network collapse due to all of the new iPhone 5 users, it's still working very well. It's not uncommon to hit 20Mb/s upload and downloads and you get used to having these speeds very quickly. Being able to upload HD videos from your phone is now doable and waiting fractions of seconds to upload videos is hard to give up.
Operating System I'm not too fussed about platform: Android, Apple iOS and Windows Phone all work very well nowadays. So long as a phone doesn't annoy me by making core functions fiddly or not having access to key apps, they're fine.
You could wait forever to buy your next phone - there are always newer and better models on the horizon. It is worth waiting a little longer to buy a 3G flagship. There's every chance that the new Nexus could trump the SGS3 and One X in a fortnight's time. However, both older phones are still very good.

On Monday, Lenovo’s newly acquired Motorola subsidiary made its formal return to China, after a two-year hiatus from the country. And the brand is hoping to reclaim its spot in the market, with not only high quality chinese phone, but by giving Chinese consumers control over how the devices look and feel.
Motorola was once a sizeable player in the country. But after Google bought it in 2012, the handset maker retreated from the market, and underwent significant downsizing, including staff cuts in China. After buying Motorola Mobility last year from Google for US$2.9 billion, Chinese PC maker Lenovo sought to reintroduce the brand to its home market, but the Chinese market has changed quite a bit in the past two years. Lenovo itself has become one of the country’s biggest smartphone vendors. And so has Xiaomi, a fast-rising Chinese company few may have heard of two years ago, but which is now regularly making headlines.
They’re joined by throngs of other Chinese phone brands, all of which are trying to appease local consumers with cutting-edge specs and low prices that have undercut bigger rivals such as Samsung. “The majority of consumers who used to use Motorola phones would have moved on to other brands,” said Tay Xiaohan, an analyst with research firm IDC. “The smartphone market is also now way more competitive in China than it used to be before.”
On Monday, Motorola announced it would bring its two high-end phones, the Moto X and the Moto X Pro (a Chinese version of the Nexus 6), along with the more mid-tier Moto G to the country.
However, the handset maker is betting on its phone customization service to really draw in Chinese consumers, like it has for other markets. The subsidiary’s “Moto Maker” will allow customers to change the look of the Moto X, including the back coverings, the metal trim around the device, and the homescreen.

I recalled that walnut oil was considered a good medium because it yellows less with time. It also says walnut oil "removes color from artists' tools as effectively as odorless paint thinners" and also does not "remove essential oils from artists' brushes".
Mark Gottsegen's Painter's Handbook1 says walnut oil is non-yellowing and dries a little faster than safflower and poppyseed oils. It warns that "like many nut oils" walnut oil doesn't store well and will go rancid unless refrigerated.
Pip Seymour's Artist's Handbook2 says walnut oil was used a lot in the past and, because of its very pale color and brilliant gloss, preferred over linseed oil. It says walnut oil "remains glassy, glossy, and hard-wearing over time, lending colors excellent saturation and depth" and "dries a little faster than poppy oil (3-4 days). It also warns that "freshly cold-pressed walnut oil can quickly turn rancid upon exposure to air".
I imagine how well it keeps will depend very much on how warm a climate you live in, whether it's in direct sun or not, how well the container is sealed, and how refined it is during manufacture. You'll soon notice if it's not lasting well. In fact all oils used for oil painting, start turning rancid when exposed to air; it's part of the natural drying process. It's just that the little you've mixed with your paint generally dries before you smell it or you use up the oil before it's a problem.
When it comes to using walnut cooking oil for Cheap Oil Paintings, a temptation because it's often cheaper, remember that cooking oils often have additive in them which may hamper drying. For instance Vitamin E or other antioxidants are used to increase the shelf life, but do this by retarding oxidation and thus the drying of any paint you've mixed with it.

It looks very classy with its white chassis with metal trim and handles well. The battery easily lasted all day. A big boon was that holding the Page Flip button down acted as a Menu button - we hope to see this feature on other HTC phones.
HTC's One V is the budget model and echoes the design of the legendary HTC Legend. Its solid metal chassis belies its low price although the single-core 1GHz processor felt pedestrian by modern standards and the 5-megapixel camera is noticeably inferior to other HTCs. You also need a microSD card to make the limited memory useable. The 3.7-inch screen is bright and functional but the small size and keyboard mean it's suited to those with small hands.
Last week's Windows Phone 8 launch showed off three snazzy handsets from HTC, Samsung and Nokia. Because WP8 phones all use the same systems, there's very little difference in terms of functionality. The Lumia 920 comes in some funky colours, offers 4G, a great 1280 x 760 4.5-inch screen and an optical-image-stabilized 8-megapixel camera. It also offers, wire-free charging as an option. It looks great but will be pricey at over $800.

At a time when funding for arts education is being cut in favor of math and language arts, it’s important to realize all that the arts can do for our children. Art builds the imagination, fosters creativity and problem solving, and develops fine motor skills. Art can teach kids many important lessons:

According to Americans for the Arts, children who regularly take art classes are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. They also point out that art classes help kids stay out of trouble and away from destructive influences.
But did you know that art also helps to develop language skills for reading and writing and the cognitive skills needed for math? Participating in the arts helps children learn to focus, to listen, and to be tolerant of new ideas and different people. The arts also help kids learn the value of doing a good job for its own sake, of taking pride in their work, and of setting goals for themselves and reaching those goals.
Drawing and painting are excellent and enjoyable ways for kids of all ages to become involved in art. Many kids think they “can’t draw Gallery Oil Paintings” because their drawings don’t look exactly like real things. This often fails in areas of poor data connectivity, driving consumers to abandon the entire process in frustration.
Consumers, when presented with sponsored data in increments they understand – say, an hour of a popular social media site or a day of full access to the mobile web – are quick to respond. There are the mobile operators themselves. They know that they often lack the capabilities to deliver sponsored data in a cost-effective manner, and further recognise that vague and confusing bundles of megabytes simply don’t work for all consumers, particularly those who are coming to the internet for the very first time. This is where the crucial role of data compression from third parties can make the economics of sponsored data much more viable.
Mobile data becomes infinitely more affordable, understandable and attractive when there’s something to be gained by multiple interested parties. This potential is now beginning to be realised by sponsored data, which mobile operators from Pakistan to Nigeria to Malaysia have begun to embrace as both the business models and technology to support it have fallen into place.
By supporting even these paid offers with invisible-to-the-consumer data compression technology, operators can not only keep data pricing low: but also at the same time utilise the same infrastructure that allows for sponsored data to trial their own innovations in 21st-century premium data packaging.
